The cathedral of Notre-Dame was the primary centre of higher-education earlier than the creation of the University of Paris, Le Sorbonne, which was founded in about 1150.[3] The universitas was chartered by King Philip Augustus in 1200, as a corporation granting academics (and their students) the proper to rule themselves independently from crown law and taxes.
